Virgin Media 30 Mb BB (new XL)

Post by pangster »

By accident - I came across the new XL broadband speed of 30 Mb that they are now offering.. I was on their 20 Mb (XL) service which had a paltry upload of around 650 kb - but to be fair this had been fairly consistent and reliable and I was almost always getting expected speeds:

Over the last week or so though I had noticed that the speed had dropped right off and testing on various servers and different times of the day I was only getting around 10-15 Mb download:

I tend to keep an eye on my speeds.. it's hard not to when you're running a Belkin N1 Vision Router:

I had tried rebooting the modem, router and PC's etc - all to no avail and then I checked online to see if there was any service affecting issues - which is where I found out about their new 30 Mb service:

I called up their 'technical help desk' who were as helpful as a chocolate fireguard to be honest - said there was nothing wrong with anything at their end and stated it must have been my equipment etc - to cut a long story short.. I asked to be put through to customer services.

I spoke to one of their agents there and asked for an upgrade to the 30 Mb (XL) service which he arranged - I had to pay a one off £30 activation fee and he said he would send me out a self serve/install kit with the new SuperHub on Tuesday between 8-1.. low and behold in typical Virgin Media fashion - it turned up yesterday morning! (good job I was just out my scratcher!)

So I promptly hooked it up and got it all activated and I'm happy with the speed (upload should improve to nearer 3Mb later on this year):

And it's been consistent *touches wood* ever since install. Very happy with it and the best bit is that it's CHEAPER than the 20 Mb service. I'm now paying £18.50 instead of £20 a month!! - result all round (quicker broadband and it's cheaper!).

Thought it would be worth a mention on here in case anyone else is on their 20 Mb service and hasn't heard of the 30 Mb service yet.

I've just had a flyer through the door advertising the 30Mb

I've been with Telewest/Blueyonder/Virginmedia for a number of years and my monthly payment has crept up and up and up with very little improvement in services - I was considering moving to another provider. However, I'll give them a quick call and see if they'll upgrade me and reduce my payments

Thanks for the heads-up :)
