The Legend of the Black Bitch

The Black Bitch of Linlithgow

The animal thought to be a type of greyhound, first appeared on the Burgh Seal in 1357.
The legend is believed to date to the 14th. Century.
A man who was sentenced to death was chained to a tree on the island in the middle of Linlithgow Loch.
There he was to starve to death as a warning to others.
However, as the days passed it became apparent that he was neither dying nor starving, so a watch was kept.
One night his faithful black dog was seen swimming out to her master, carrying food.
She was later caught and chained to a tree to suffer a similar fate.
